Celebrating the 2009 Maine in America Award winner Robert Indiana
On June 27, the Farnsworth Art Museum presented the fourth annual Maine in America Award to Robert Indiana, who first gained recognition as a key figure of the Pop Art movement in New York in the early 1960s.
During this time, Indiana began a series of paintings, prints, and sculptures using the word LOVE, thus creating one of the most recognizable images in the history of American art. Since his arrival on Vinalhaven in 1970, he has joined a long list of artists for whom Maine has been both home and inspiration.
