Earth hues and lush materials heat things up while splashes of neutral keep it balanced
During a time when neutral colors rule the roost in interior design, it’s a pleasant shock to the system to see a space that leans into a color motif without beating you over the head. In this bedroom of a Montana mountain chalet—one of 11 residences featured in Extraordinary Interiors (Monacelli, 2022) by Suzanne Tucker of acclaimed interior design firm Tucker and Marks—a deep red-orange permeates the space, filling a hole left by increasingly popular grays and beiges.
Shown in the headboard, textural rugs, bedside lamps, curtains, wall paint, bedspread, and pillows, these ochre, bordering-on-terracotta hues exude a warmth that envelops the inhabitant, creating an oddly soothing effect rarely evoked by such a daring shade. “I am never one to shy away from the bold or massive,” writes Tucker. “[In this house], we looked for materials, textures, furnishings, art, and objects that met the scale of each space and the primeval drama outside. Yet these rooms still called for comfort and seduction. This we accomplished with the humanizing touch of the handcrafted and warm, earth hues pulled from the surrounding terrain.”
To balance the potentially overwhelming power of this vibrant tone, Tucker punctuated the room with splashes of neutral colors (in the abstract chandelier, bedside tables, and the set of bunk beds recessed into the wall) and lush materials (in the luxuriant rugs, drapes, and cowhide storage bench) to soften the experience. Finally, a pop of bright blue on a decorative side table creates a dissonance that wakes the viewer up. The result is an invigorating space for restorative sleep.
