The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) is hosting its 22nd Biennial exhibition, which features work from 34 artists across 17 Maine communities. Local artists submitted more than 500 individual pieces for a chance to be featured in the show. “It’s always a process of discovery to learn the jurors’ selections and to see the breadth of talent within the state,” says CMCA executive director Suzette McAvoy in a press release.

Nina Johnson-Milewski, owner, founder, and director of Nina Johnson Gallery in Miami, Florida, and Kate McNamara, an independent curator and educator from Providence, Rhode Island, were the jurors for the exhibition. “I hope this exhibition will reflect the importance of harnessing the creative spirit, particularly in times of disconnection, isolation, and confusion,” writes Johnson-Milewski in a jurors’ statement. Artists featured in the exhibition include Portlandbased fiber artist Isabelle Maschal O’Donnell, painters Kevin Ford and Meg Hahn, and Temple-based multimedia artist Tom Jessen, among many others.

The CMCA Biennial exhibition dates back to 1978 and takes place in the fall of even-numbered years; it is the longestrunning open juried exhibition in the state of Maine. Opened in Rockland this October, the Biennial will remain on view until April 2021.
