Casual Elegance
STYLE ROOM – August 2013
By Annie Kiladjian
“As most will agree, our own homes are usually the last space to get a facelift. Our lives are so busy with family and work that we ignore one of our most precious assets: our home. Although I design for a living, I did not see my own home as a priority. That is all about to change. I am starting slowly, and doing one room at a time, updating and reconnecting the ‘then’ with the ‘now.’ This is the design scheme for my new living room. I love transitional style—a mix of modern and traditional aesthetics that is in most cases timeless. I am also using a more monochromatic color scheme. That way, when I want to mix things up a bit, I can add pops of color with accent pillows and accessories. This can be so much less costly than buying new furniture every time I’m ready for a change in style. The furniture I have decided to use features clean lines and is very comfortable. I enjoy entertaining and do so often, so my home—especially my living room—needs to be both elegant and practical. I can’t imagine having to worry every time someone decides to put their feet up on my sofa. However, I still want to present a more elegant look to showcase my many treasures. Over the years I have acquired many interesting objects through my travels, many that will meld well with what I have going into this space. The colors and textures of some of the art and accessories will be a wonderful backdrop for my new room. When I moved to Maine 12 years ago I never imagined that this might be the place that I would permanently call home. Now, I cannot imagine ever leaving. I am finally getting the chance to settle down and add style and elegance to my home.”
