Luxe Living Room

STYLE ROOM – July 2013
By James Light

“During my initial meeting with clients, I try to gather their expectations for their space. How will the room be used? What time of day will it most likely be used? How much light does it get? How many people will the room accommodate? If the house is large, how can we make sure we don’t repeat the usefulness of another room? This particular space is the formal living room of a family with young children. They wanted it to be inviting, kid-friendly, and not too stodgy. The layout drove the design, with the focus on the fireplace as well as creating a space for evening reading and cocktails, with the flexibility to expand for entertaining. I like a seating arrangement that can be cozy for two, intimate for four, and accommodate six. A well-placed pair of additional chairs can be pulled in on the rare occasion in which more than six would like to sit in one setting, such as opening Christmas presents or a book group. Ultimately we decided to use a simplified palette of grays and reds, tying in the color scheme of the foyer and dining room. We achieved richness and depth with a textured wall cloth and a simple woven carpe
