“I grew up in a large family in South Berwick and have always loved being outdoors and near the ocean. Nature’s colors, its hues and textures, and the feel of country life are imprinted on my heart, and most definitely carry forward into my designs. My goal is to create a space that functions well for those who live in it every day. It has to have comfortable furniture and use colors and fabrics that my clients love. While I am not a total purist, there has to be consideration of the impact that the project will have on the environment. If there is some life left in a piece of furniture or a cabinet, there are places other than the local landfill where they can be taken: a consignment store, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, or Goodwill. There are a growing number of sources for environmentally friendly home furnishings and home decorating products. I encourage clients to ask questions when making any purchases: where is it made, how is it made, and what are the materials used? Are any harmful substances used to manufacture the product? And buy local or at least U.S.-made whenever possible. Eco-friendly is no longer without style. In this ocean-side living room design, the chairs and sofa have cushions made from recycled foam, American hardwood that is sustainably harvested, and no formaldehyde in the glues or finishes. I love the simple lines and substantial comfort of these pieces. The Maxwell fabrics have been tested for harmful substances according to Oeko-Tex standards. The end tables are made from old wheels from Vietnamese peasant carts. The room is simple, peaceful, and eco-friendly.”
