Color Theory
STYLE ROOM – July2012
By Marcy van der Kieft & Megan van der Kieft
The colors of daffodils and tulips bursting through green grass motivate us to awaken our homes. At Margo Moore, a fresh array of this season’s textures and colors brings inspiration. Our philosophy of design, reflected in this bedroom, combines seasonal hues with classic elegance and playful modern touches. Kelly green and geometric prints bring a young but timeless feel to the bedding and draperies. Decorating with colors can be tricky; we recommend the 60-30-10 rule: choose a main color and mix in two complementary hues in increments of 30 and 10 percent. Adding textural accents into a space brings depth. Here, we’ve evoked early summer ground covering by bringing in a neutrally colored, sustainable woven rug to balance the green. A quirky papier-mâché mirror jumps off the wall, and a table lamp adds a sculptural component to the room. The orange chevron-patterned wastebasket and the subtle piping on the X-bench come together perfectly to make up the final 10 percent needed to complete our color theory. Personal elements at the bedside signify classic elegance and style. For this room we chose handmade faceted boxes for their charm and a flat-woven throw with hand-twisted fringe for those chilly Maine evenings.
