Little Ponds Residence
The home is composed of three structures situated on a wooded coastal site in Harpswell and takes its cues from the rugged coastline and the dense vegetation found on site.
The property’s main structure is situated to take advantage of an existing exposed ledge wall that becomes a boundary for the lower-level covered parking area. The main living spaces are elevated to capture the waterfront views of Quahog Bay. A central hearth and library divide the public spaces from the private spaces. The division of public and private is also reinforced in the structure’s massing: two distinct volumes are created, both with pitched roofs that mimic the sloped site. The home’s exterior has stained eastern white cedar, with the approach side treated with a series of different stain colors and board sizes referencing the surrounding pine trees. The property also includes an artist’s studio and renovated writer’s cabin that will be used for guest accommodation.
