Room To Grow
This 1920s bungalow set in a quaint neighborhood in Cape Elizabeth will undergo an interior renovation to open up its first floor. Because the original four- square-style interior layout sectioned off the home’s floor plan into quadrants, which made it difficult for occupants to feel connected when in separate rooms, one of the project’s primary goals is to provide new, strategically located structural elements that allow for more open and light- filled living spaces throughout the first floor. Due to the family having outgrown the bounds of the original footprint, there was also a need to grow the structure outward to allow the family to spread out. The homeowners wanted to add a new addition to the existing bungalow that would give them additional inte- rior space while maintaining the identity of the original struc- ture. A subtle flat-roofed entry addition works to functionally connect the newly planned attached garage while maximizing the visual impact of the existing gabled roof structure. The new portions of the project also call for custom perimeter roof-trim profiles that match the existing trim to fully integrate the new and the old.
