Soft but Bold
She mixes high and low, rough and refined, rigid and organic—sometimes, it seems, with a flute of pink champagne in hand,” says designer Miles Redd in the foreword to A Home for All Seasons by Danielle Rollins (Rizzoli, 2020). Rollins can really throw a party, and her book is filled with some of the best tips for entertaining, but it was her daughter’s bedroom that caught our eye. The room doubles as a guest room and was designed with longevity and timelessness in mind. Rollins wanted the space to be happy and whimsical and came up with a scheme of aqua, red, and white. The red and white Sister Parish print used on the walls, bed canopy, table skirt, and upholstery give the room cohesion. Although there are sophisticated touches like the classic fabrics, daybed, and lighting, Rollins made sure to mix in a bold zebra rug and an eclectic mix of artwork. She also cut the “sweetness factor” by fabricating the canopy rods from plumbing pipe and painting it white. The idea is to have fun while not making anything too precious.
