This energy-efficient and light-filled home set amid cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot vines overlooking Healdsburg’s Dry Creek Valley is one of 17 California properties featured in Heather Sandy Hebert and Chase Reynolds Ewald’s new book, At Home in the Wine Country (Gibbs Smith, August 2021). The focus of the design by Sutro Architects and Adeeni Design Group—the same architect and interior designer who collaborated on an earlier remodel of the family’s San Francisco Edwardian—was on eco-consciousness and “less is more.” (There is no air-conditioning, for example, but the use of concrete as well as the house’s orientation keep it from holding too much heat in the summer months.) The understated palette extends to the kitchen in its concrete floors and backsplash, steel countertops, and cedar and walnut ceiling and cabinetry. Over-counter shelves lend to the casual atmosphere, and the massive window flanking the second sink functions as a passthrough to the dining table by the pool. “We limited the palette to the colors of the vineyard,” says designer Claudia Juestel, speaking of the pops of green that can be found throughout the house, including these avocado kitchen stools.
