Open Office

STYLE ROOM – October 2013
Heidi Kirn, Art Director

“My studio is the place I go to dream up ideas. It needs to be a separate space where I can get away to be creative and have quiet time. I wanted the right mix of colors to be both energizing and relaxing, so I chose orange accents that evoke creativity and happiness and white walls that are simple and calming. My style tends toward a mix of vintage and contemporary. Sometimes one piece can inspire a whole room, like this vintage orange clock radio that I love and decided to use as my jumping-off piece. I also like my workspace to be bright and airy. Clean lines with just a few pops of color keep things fun. Filling my space with friends’ artwork brings me happiness. This piece here is by my friend and fellow spinning partner, artist Corey Daniels. To help stick to a budget, I like to mix select high-end items (like this Thos. Moser chair) with flea-market finds and found objects such as beach stones, which I collect with my kids. For further inspiration, I asked interior designer Ariana Fischer what she suggests for an office. Her answer: collections of art and architecture books for inspiration, and plants. She says these items make everyone feel better—healthy, smart, and grounded. I chose a plant that was in my art classroom in high school and has been the subject of many still-life drawings and paintings. It makes me happy and brings a lot of good energy to the room.”
