Attainable Design

STYLE ROOM – March 2013
By Deborah Chatfield

“Often I hear the comment ‘I would like to be able to hire an interior designer but I don’t think I can afford it.’ I have an answer to that: ‘Yes you can.’ I think there’s a misconception with young couples just starting out that designers are not affordable. I personally work hourly and will help pull together a look for a couple who can then go purchase elsewhere. The Internet has changed the way designers can work with clients on a budget, and the savvy client understands that. I think the dining room is an opportunity for young couples to express their personalities as they entertain large groups, have daily family meals, or host intimate get-togethers with friends. The modern design that I’ve pulled together here works for informal or formal situations and is easily attainable through mail-order catalogs and websites. Right now my new favorite white is Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. It’s an all-out unadorned, approachable color that pairs nicely with stainless steel, black, and other grays—totally neutral without being white. I’m also in love with the CB2 catalog—it’s affordable, innovative, and geared toward younger clients on a budget. While at the New York Gift Fair in 2011, I discovered LinenMe. This wonderful line of linen fabrics is so affordable and luscious it will make your head spin. The availability by the yard will allow you to re-cover anything, and it’s completely washable for those with young children.”
