Building in Soul

STYLE ROOM – December 2012
By Linda Banks

With a beautiful blend of handcrafted wood moldings, parts, and details, designer Linda Banks builds soul into a room.

“Dreaming up ways to ‘de-Sheetrock’ a house comes naturally to me, and I am asked the same question on every job: ‘Can you make our house special just for us?’ Whether the house is an antique Cape or a new home under construction, the addition of wood moldings, parts, and pieces can transform it from ordinary to extraordinary. The beauty of these details is that they can be added at any time. Big and bold or delicate and whimsical, each piece of molding or trim is layered on to define and articulate an edge, a wall, or a cabinet detail. It is my way of telling a story. Ropes, scrolls, scallops, and slatted boards used in various configurations help create warmth and build soul into the architecture. Inspired by my childhood vacations in Maine and my past 20 summers on an island in France, I have created a personal portfolio of ideas, moldings, and original detailing that go into the design of each of my projects. Real wood is an authentic, natural material that adds character, personality, and charm. Never fussy or flamboyant, I want my houses to be happy and fresh, warm and welcoming.”
