Dining Room to Devour

STYLE ROOM-September 2011

by Nicole Yee

Most of my family lives in New England. When I return to Maine from my home in California each year, I spend much of my time catching up with loved ones. There’s no better place to surround oneself with good company than in an inviting dining room designed for lingering conversation. That’s what inspired this design. I love creating bold designs using simple shapes, large graphic patterns, interesting textures, and pops of vivid color. In this design, I started by layering soft colors: pale walls, “powdered-sugar” white furniture, white and gold hand-blocked cotton textiles, and a beautiful wool and silk rug that echoes the neutral palette. The feeling is serene, sophisticated, and comfortable. Antique brass details combined with white surfaces have a classic, nautical feel. Contemporary shapes and textures layer in to give the room a fresh and modern feel. To punch up the excitement and add personality, I added bright red chairs and a pair of “dinner party” chandeliers—which are sure to spark conversation. The result is a striking, original design that’s crisp, elegant, and vibrant.
