The University of Maine Museum of Art’s Contemporary Currents exhibition spotlights the varied creative endeavors of our Canadian neighbors

In celebration of a partnership between the Maine Arts Commission and the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture, the University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor presents Contemporary Currents: Nine New Brunswick Artists. On view from September 23 through December 31, the exhibition highlights a diversity of creative approaches and genres, from Stephen Scott’s expressive oil and watercolor portraits to Anna Torma’s intricate hand-embroidered silk compositions inspired by her children’s early drawings to Istvan Zsako’s sculptural layering of metal tape measures on wood, its gradation of yellow and gold tones recalling a late fall prairie.

“The government of New Brunswick has a dedicated history of supporting the professional development of artists,” says UMMA museum director George Kinghorn, noting that the majority of works featured in this exhibition were acquired by the province through its longstanding Art Bank program. “It was immensely rewarding for UMMA to be a partner on this landmark exhibition. We hope projects such as this will inspire future collegial and worthwhile collaborations between Maine and New Brunswick institutions.”
