Functional Study, Quiet Sanctuary

This Space, This Way:

When designing this study for a busy mom, Brett Johnson had one goal in mind: create a functional space that would double as a beautiful and quiet sanctuary. The room over-delivers; it also serves as a luxurious guest room with a custom sofa bed, complete with handmade bedding.

“The palette and textures are an update on Maine coastal style,” says Johnson. “It was important for the client to have the custom casework, upholstered furniture, and metal furniture all made by Maine craftspeople. The hand-rubbed floor-paint finish was inspired by the Olson House in Cushing, made famous by artist Andrew Wyeth.”

Signature Style:

“When creating spaces for my clients it is of utmost importance that the life they live in the space is taken into account. In this study, the homeowner had very specific work-space and storage requirements. The functions of work and the multitasking of a mom do not always jive with those of serenity and beauty. We worked to create two work and storage areas that could be tucked away under the eaves of this shingle-style home at the end of a busy day.”

Trick of the Trade:

“The room has three windows that do not perfectly match, so we added a single curtain rod that spans the room. This helped unify the wall and, with the soft drapery panels, to frame the artful lighting. In this relatively small room we punctuated the space with custom-made glass and metal tables—a source of reflection in lieu of a mirror.”
