Letter from the Editor-June

It’s been a long journey home.
Salmon, sea turtles, blue- fin tuna…they all return to the places they were born. Some travel thousands and thousands of miles to return. There should be a term for all of the Mainers who do this. I’ve heard of the boomerang effect. Maybe it’s something to do with the sea?
I was born on the coast of Maine, in the idyllic set- ting of Kennebunkport, to two artists. Even as a teenager, I knew how lucky I was to live in Maine, but I knew, like the fish, I had to leave in order to come back.
I started far away, backpacking through Europe, then headed south to the Savannah College of Art and Design. My career in yacht design and interior design took me to the bright lights of New York City, up to the mitten of Michigan, down to the music in Austin, and up to Victoria, British Columbia. All the while, Maine was never far, and people knew it. I would often hear “Are you an ‘advocate’ for Maine or something?” In 2009 I found my way back home, and just as soon as I did, I shared the good company of some true Maine “advocates.” I even got to join their team. The family here at Maine Home+Design and Maine magazines share an extreme passion for our state.
There’s no place like Maine in June. And there is certainly no place like Maine in June in Kennebunkport. I hope you will come celebrate the kickoff to summer and share amazing food, music, and wine with me at the Kennebunkport Festival from May 31 to June 4.
This month we also welcome designers from all over the country to ABSTRACT: The Future of Design in Media conference hosted by AIGA Maine. You will see lots of designers swarming the streets on June 10 for this great event.
It’s been six months now since I took the role of art director here at Maine Home+Design. You may have noticed some subtle design changes. No matter what the design—from the interiors of yachts to the pages of this magazine—I strive toward simplicity and vibrancy. I am thrilled to be designing a magazine that focuses on the industry that I am so familiar with. I like to think that it is a unique perspective and I hope it is one you enjoy too. Most of all, I feel very fortunate to visually lead you, the reader, through the amazing homes in this place that you and I call home, admire “from away,” or are just discovering. Perhaps you are still on your journey home. If so, you’ll make it back. They always do.
Let the summer begin!
