Porches in Conversation

For a Jessie Carroll Architect project in Cumberland, nothing says home like a porch. A porch is a timeless accessory with classic New England appeal. As a literal threshold to the landscape, it has the potential to add not only beauty but function as well. It provides shade for the user and protects the building, including its window and door systems. The passive solar benefits are substantial for covered south-facing porches, which provide shade to shield from heat overload in the summer months and allow for solar gain in the winter heating months. For this build, these exterior rooms further offer an extension of the interior spaces, including a dining and grilling porch off the kitchen, a sitting porch off the living and dining rooms, and a coffee porch off the primary bedroom suite. For the homeowners, these porches provide opportunities to experience their Maine coastal landscape while staying close to home.
