Good Bones
Phi Builders and Architects was recently given the unique opportunity to adapt a large commercial structure into a family-scaled private residence. Through demolition completed early in the design process, Phi was able to thoroughly investigate the existing building and explore solutions that would not have been possible otherwise. For instance, the exposed steel frame provided inspiration for incorporating it as an interior feature, as well as using additional raw materials such as locally sourced stone, spruce, and charred wood siding. A new entry portico composed of familiar forms and a row of clerestory windows above the porch create a welcoming exterior. Inside, the home features an open floor plan ready for entertaining and a living room with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The collaborative nature of the design-build process with the owners will result in a home that is distinctly suited to them.
