A couple—small business owners with two young sons—purchased a lovely south-facing lot within walking distance to the center of Brunswick with the intention of building an energy-efficient four-bedroom home. Wanting to team up with a contractor and architect from the onset of the project, the owners began working with Senecal Construction Services and David Matero Architecture.

The family envisioned a light-filled, open plan for the first floor. Other important items on their checklist included a first-floor master bedroom suite, generous mudroom/laundry, a basement guest room/game room, and an in-ground pool. To meet the owner’s requirements, the architects oriented the main façade to the south for maximum solar gain but with exterior shades to block the summer sun. The living room and kitchen feature light-filled cathedral ceilings with large windows and dormers to bring in light from above. A second-floor loft reserved for the parents is set above the dining room to create a more intimate setting below than in the living room and kitchen, which feature high ceilings.

The two boys have their own loft outside their bedrooms, which include small bathrooms, as well as a shared laundry room. Oriented to capture some morning light, the first-floor master bedroom is set toward the north for privacy. The in-ground pool, the center of outdoor play, is nestled into a corner of the house oriented toward summer afternoon sun and is visible from several vantage points within the house. The screened porch with outdoor fireplace completes the indoor/outdoor space, giving the family many options for enjoying their home and property. The design reflects the family’s intention to enjoy both friends and family in a home that offers both social and private spaces.
