A Cottage Community
THE DRAWING BOARD-June 2010
Connecting with the charm of the Kennebunks
This project is an intimate neighborhood of seven cottage-style homes in Kennebunk’s Lower Village. The vision is of discreet, traditional cottages in a picturesque setting enhanced by front porches, pocket gardens, and sensitive architectural massing, all within walking distance on sidewalks to the ’Port and to Kennebunk Beach.
As the homes are designed without a specific client in mind, they offer spatial configurations that appeal to a broad variety of potential lifestyles.
Lots are large enough for privacy, yet small enough for ease of maintenance. They offer traditional village density and corresponding opportunity for neighborly interaction and vibrancy that’s not always found in new neighborhoods. Each home is sensitively designed and sited to offer privacy as well as the opportunity for over-the-fence interaction.
“Cottage style” means something different to everyone—in this case, the aim is to appeal to a variety of tastes, while creating architectural congruity, maximizing solar gain and woodland views, and taking into consideration topography and proximity to neighboring houses.
Traditional materials and massing and classic architectural styles will evoke Nantucket, coastal Maine, and English cottage vernaculars.
