LETTER FROM THE EDITOR – July 2012

Last month, on the busiest day of the cycle at Maine Home+Design—after we finalized all the last-minute particulars on our pages and uploaded the files to our printer—Rebecca Falzano, Kevin Thomas, Steve Kelly, and I headed over to the Portland Museum of Art for the biennial AIA Maine Design Awards ceremony (page 29). I was honored to speak on our behalf, celebrating MH+D’s long-standing relationship with Maine’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The next evening, several of us went to Maine College of Art’s Art Honors celebration, during which Earle Shettleworth of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and philanthropist and hedge fund manager S. Donald Sussman were both recognized for their support of the Maine art world. That Wednesday evening was the soft opening of the restaurant Earth at Hidden Pond, and Thursday we hosted a party welcoming our friends and new neighbors from Simply Home Studio (page 28), who just opened a fabulous new shop downstairs from our office. On Friday, a few of us headed to Mount Desert Island to work on Maine magazine’s 48 Hours story, where we chronicled our explorations in this wonderful part of our state for Maine’s July issue.
By the time this issue hits newsstands, the 2012 Kennebunkport Festival will be a series of lovely memories: Cellardoor Winery’s exquisite party, Pop the Kennebunks, the Brews and Tunes music festival, the Grand Tasting, the Art. Works. art show, and a series of Art of Dining dinners that helped raise $20,000 for Share Our Strength. The Maine Home+Design Show in Rockport will have taken place, bringing together vendors from all over the state whose work so often appears on the pages of MH+D. Attendees had the opportunity to discuss projects they’ve been dreaming up at home with architects, builders, interior and landscape designers, and a multitude of other home-related craftspeople.
By the time you’re holding this magazine in your hands, we’ll be through what is possibly the busiest time of the year for us at Maine Home+Design, but it’s not likely that we’ll be resting. Publisher Kevin Thomas and I will be doing what we do with the talented and imaginative staff who work with us: dreaming and discussing, planning and plotting, throwing ideas around, seeing what sticks, and then building something new. Oftentimes we reflect that Maine is the only place for us. A fertile ground for ideas and aspirations and where, despite challenges, there is room for daydreams to turn into determinations.
