A Joyful Living Space Bursting with Color and Pattern

Infuse your home with joie de vivre with these nine finds

When it comes to interiors, visual and tactile elements—like an unexpected pop of color, the look and feel of a particular wood grain, or an exquisitely textured fabric—are often the most notable aspects of a well-designed space. Interior designer Amanda Reynal, in her debut book, Designing Rooms with Joie de Vivre: A Fresh Take on Classic Style (Abrams, 2023), takes a meaningful stance on design: even more important than aesthetics, she writes, is “the feeling that emanates from our creations.” A sense of joie de vivre is evident when studying Reynal’s designs, from her fearless use of color and pattern to her impeccable layering and attention to detail. “Regardless of room type,” Reynal emphasizes, “each space should not only dazzle with its decoration but emote an energy that brings us happiness and a feeling of well-being.” After all, she explains, “a beautiful room without joy is simply a collection of things.”

Of course, joy is an emotion that looks different to each individual—one person may find pleasure in bold, vibrant colors, while another prefers the calm, serene atmosphere created by neutral tones. Reynal believes in designing spaces “that are inherently joyful and don’t take themselves too seriously,” understands the intimate components of emotion, and argues that, regardless of the origin of one’s joy, every person desires “moments in life that make us smile and imbue us with a lighthearted sense of place and gratitude.”

In the bright and airy indoor/outdoor living space pictured here, Reynal chose to offset soft pink hues with a playful chartreuse. The bright yellow drapes, which provide shelter when the sun peeks through the surrounding palm trees, complement the yellow accents in the water-resistant settee’s summery take on a classic floral print.Topped with cheerful white and green patterned shades, two colorful lamps on opposite sides of the sitting area combine a classic shape with a statement finish. Woven rattan elements, including the side tables, napkin rings, and a serving tray, add a touch of tropical texture to this welcoming space. Create your own joyful room with these nine finds.
