Timeless Design
Autumn brings with it a feeling of coziness you want reflected in your interiors. The design of architect Cary Tamarkin’s living room in Coastal Living (Ryland Peters & Small, 2016) by Henrietta Heald is minimalistic without being austere. A quartet of Hans Wegner chairs with woven rush seats are placed in an intimate circle around a marble-topped coffee table. Shag carpets are no longer the high-pile, unruly dirt catchers they were in the 1960s and 1970s. Lower-pile versions have made a recent comeback and soften a room. Subtle warm touches go a long way; scatter wooden bowls or games throughout the room. A soothing hanging Akari light completes the mood in this room and plays off the fireplace. Akari in Japanese means “light,” not only in the sense of providing illumination, but also in the idea of weightlessness. Designer Isamu Noguchi first came up with the concept for these lights in 1951 in response to seeing the lanterns used by night fisherman in Japan.
The interior walls and ceilings of Tamarkin’s home are lined with oiled cedar paneling, while concrete is the material used for floors and the fireplace surround.
