Vignette Views
Tucked into a secluded patch of coastal forest in Northport, this home designed by Skaala grows out of the rolling terrain to gain views of Penobscot Bay and its rocky islands. After careful sitework and planning, the spatial forms and fenestration were strategically placed to provide vignette views through the woods, without obvious or direct alignments on those views. Gaining in height and volume for living areas that are gathered on the southern and eastern edges, the roof and structure ascends along its entire west- east axis, starting at a pedestrian height at the westerly carport and growing to two and a half stories at the eastern living spaces. Dramatically, this geometry mirrors the slope of the land, inherently opening the house to the sun and views while offering protection from prevailing winter winds. The materials will be naturally finished wood and metal siding and metal roofing, left to patina in the coastal environment. Double-stud wall construction and an advanced window package give this home a tight and well-insulated envelope, while passive solar gains and air-source heat pumps provide all required heating.
