Gary Haynes
Portrait of a Woman in a Red Dress (Mrs. David Shapiro), c. 1960, oil on linen, 16” x 15” by Norman Rockwell, 1894–1978. Says Haynes of this work: “I believe the unusual sketchy, loosely painted, and impasto characteristics of this portrait by Norman Rockwell was the result of the woman visiting the artist’s studio while he was working on a canvas which had been carefully laid out for another painting. She was striking in her red dress and wonderful profile. He captured the essence of the moment.”
