The original home ended where the chimney is but had a foundation in place for an addition. Susan and Rufus used that footprint to create a new wing with an owners’ bedroom suite and a study, seen in the foreground. The shingles were hand dipped by the couple to match the gradated gray-black of a faded Led Zeppelin T-shirt. Anne Cox of Hedgerow in Martinsville carved out the beds of hay-scented ferns, clethra, and Enkianthus campanulatus.
