A Marriage of Styles
The living room’s cathedral ceiling incorporates wood beams and horizontal steel trusses. The homeowners, having looked at a variety of chimneys in books and being aware of the relatively intimate size of their room, chose to have the chimney stop part way up the wall. Says one of the homeowners, “If you took the stone to the ceiling, the chimney would look like it was falling over on you.” The painting above the fireplace is by Jay Connaway, whose New England landscapes were shown in a 2009 Portland Museum of Art exhibition.
