Thorne designed the living room’s Rumford-style fireplace, with a striking checker-tile surround and a raised hearth, inset with beach pebbles that is suitable for seating. Birds carved by his father grace the mantel, and Nova Scotia artist John Neville’s The Fog hangs above. The chairs came from Cox’s grandparents, through her parents, to her. Her mother always sat in the chair on the right, her father in the left one. Her father bought the chess set in North Africa during his service in World War II.
