Reclaiming a Room

STYLE ROOM – January 2014

After bringing our new baby home from the hospital, our bedroom was transformed into new parent ground zero. The infant paraphernalia had taken over—a happy signal that life would never be the same. But now that our daughter is settled in her own room, it’s time to reclaim our space for this new phase of our lives. Our dream bedroom would be peaceful, quiet, and unfussy. As sleepless new parents, a restful color on the walls is a must. Blue is said to promote calm, and Stiffkey Blue by Farrow and Ball is a blue so gray it acts almost as a neutral. As the centerpiece of the room, the bed has to be a little dramatic, but not too heavy. Oly’s Faline Bed with its deer-footed legs would fit the bill: a whimsical and fitting nod to the horse farms and deer herds near our house in rural Falmouth. I’ve always loved the rustic, clean look of white painted floors, and they would give a visual break (along with the white furniture) from the bolder walls. The black and white patterned rug would offer some geometric interest, and the Brahms Mount ombre throw makes a cozy cover for naps with the little one.
