To add depth and light to the living room, the team installed French doors, added ceiling beams, and extended the fireplace mantel across the room with a mirrored wall above it. The result is small space that feels bigger, lighter, and airier. Choosing the right fireplace was quite a feat as well. “We bought the house in October and spent our first two weeks here over Thanksgiving and came back in January. The germination of this project began in the winter, so we had to make all these decisions about heat,” says homeowner Bonnie Bastow Kuykendall. “Picture a couple of Tucson people trundling around looking at heat sources.” They chose a gas fireplace from Smith and May.
